Finnish electric vehicle (EV) fast-charging solutions manufacturer Kempower recently hosted three of Europe’s biggest commercial vehicle manufacturers to test out its megawatt charging system (MCS) in the sub-zero temperatures of Sweden.
German commercial vehicle manufacturer Man Truck & Bus and Swedish commercial transport solutions providers Scania and Volvo all attended the Kempower MCS Live Winter Days held in January, though revealed only last week.
“Our aim with this event was to demonstrate that MCS is live and here to stay,” said Antti Vuola, VP of products at Kempower.
“More importantly, we wanted to bring together the key actors in the industry to highlight the importance of collaboration in advancing the further deployment of MCS for heavy-duty electrification.”
The test day was held at a truck depot in Norrköping, Sweden, owned and operated by Alfredsson Transport AB, which has been operating a fully fossil-free fleet since 2015.
The truck depot was also home of the globally first known real-life charging session which used the official MCS charging communication protocol to charge a Scania truck with a Kempower MCS charger back in August 2025.
As the first MCS truck charging hub in Sweden, the Alfredsson Transport depot boasts a total of 12 charging points for heavy-duty vehicles measuring up to 34 metres in length and offers charging power from 400 kW up to 1.2 MW, built entirely with Kempower’s hardware and charging management software.
The truck depot boasts a 2.4-megawatt (MW) grid connection as well as another 2.4-megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery storage, ensuring the site is able to optimise costs per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The depot is also supported by a 400 kW solar system.
Attending the Kempower MCS Live Winter Days, Man, Scania, and Volvo each brought their own MCS-ready trucks to demonstrate charging with a Kempower MCS charger.
Man Truck & Bus, one of Europe’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturers, brought one of its eTGX battery electric trucks, which currently boasts charging capacity up to 750 kW.
Battery capacity of up to 480 kWh helps deliver driving range of around 500 kilometres, but a stop of only 45 minutes at an MCS charger can add around 350 kilometres of charge.
“The MAN eTruck has proven the stability of the MCS charging process during the live demonstrations in Sweden, including controlled charging performance and secure communication between vehicle and charger,” said Sven Steckhan, program lead charging at Man Truck & Bus.
“All our tests confirm the robustness of hardware and software integration and underline the maturity of MCS technology for future series production.”
