Tesla CEO Elon Musk last month revealed that it will āstop sellingā its Full Self Driving (FSD) technology package, which commanded prices of more than $10,000 in Australia, and will be focusing on subscriptions only.
Now the companyās local arm has confirmed the timing of the subscription only offering in Australia and New Zealand.
From April 2026, customers who order a new Tesla will no longer be able to purchase FSD Supervised for life of the car. It will only subscription offering in our market for buyers after 31 March 2026.
Existing customers of Hardware 4 HW4 cars can purchase FSD Supervised outright via the app until 31 March 2026 as an upgrade after purchase.
On top of that, Enhanced Autopilot and FSD Supervised transfers also end as of 31 March 2026 and will not be offered in the future.
Tesla has been working on FSD for many years and in recent months rolled out the supervised version in Australia and New Zealand markets.
In January on X post, Musk said: āTesla will stop selling FSD after Feb 14. FSD will only be available as a monthly subscription thereafter.ā
That news was for the US market and is effective as of tomorrow there.
Locally on 18 September 2025, Tesla launched the FSD supervised software to all eligible cars in Australia and New Zealand, making them the first right-hand-drive markets in the world to access this tech.
At that time, this software was available on all new vehicles as an option with the current pricing of $10,100. Soon after, a monthly subscription that starts at $149 per month was launched.
This subscription offering has helped bring thousands of current owners to try FSD Supervised for the first time in Australia but itās worth noting that the software isnāt currently available to older, Hardware 3-equipped cars, hence subscription isnāt available to those owners.
Teslaās FSD Supervised has been popular with the company revealing that itās already been used for more than 1 million kilometres by owners across Australia and New Zealand.
The demand for FSD Supervised has been growing in many parts of the world. With subscriptions being the only offering in just over a monthās time locally, itād be interesting to see what the uptake of the software is locally in 2026.
On top of the demand, we look forward to seeing how this software evolves locally given autonomy being such a big focus of the company in years to come.
