GAC Aion UT electric hatchback gets approval for sale, just days after launch confirmed

GAC, an automotive giant that recently arrived in Australia, has now had its upcoming affordable electric hatchback approved for sale in the country.

According to the approval documentation, the GAC Aion UT, which is expected to be priced in the sub $30,000 bracket, will come in a single variant, equipped with a 150 kW motor.

The vehicle will have a tare weight of 1,700 kg, making it a fairly light offering for the 4.27 metre long car. This is comparable to other similar hatchbacks and will likely compete with the MG4, GWM Ora and the BYD Dolphin.

The local variant will feature 17-inch wheels and is bigger than those offered on the entry-level BYD Dolphin hatchback.

The Aion UT comes with a sloping front design, along with a curved rear hatch. The charge port is located at the front driver’s side of the car, with fairly easy access when parked into the charge bay.

On the design front, the car is designed by the brand’s design centre in Milan, Italy and packs quite a bit of space on the inside.

Inside, the UT interior features a minimal design and two screens. The larger infotainment screen has a 14.6-inch touch display, while a smaller 8.8-inch screen is also found behind the steering wheel.

Up to 440 Litres of boot space is on offer with the seats up. This can increase to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded down.

The Aion UT was launched at the Guangzhou Auto Show in 2024. This model in the Aion lineup features a 100 kW motor that can reach up to 150 km/h. 

Then in 2025, the model made its way to Thailand with a bigger 150 kW motor model, which, according to the latest approval documentation, is what we are receiving locally.

In September 2025, a pink Aion UT was spotted testing on Australian roads in Sydney, hinting at the potential for that car to enter our market.

This will be the GAC’s second electric offering in the Australian market after launching late last year with the Aion V electric SUV.

Even with its recent launch, the company already has 15 dealers nationwide and is expected to grow to 35 by the end of 2026.

Local pricing and specs for the upcoming model are expected to be released closer to the local launch in the second quarter of this year.
