Tesla launched a new 6-seater Model Y L in August 2025, with prices starting at $A72,700 in the Chinese market, which subsequently raked in nearly 40,000 orders on its first day.
Now, it’s heading closer to release in Australia with reports out of South Korea confirming that this Shanghai-built model has received approval for sale in that market, delivering up to 553 km of range from an 88.2 kWh battery pack.
This was first shared by Tesla observer Tslachan on X, with an image of the approval documentation highlighting key specs.
According to the latest documentation, the model will weigh 2,090 kg and will be propelled by two motors with a combined output of just under 380 kW.
Previous reports out of Europe last month showcased that the battery pack will have 4,600 individual cells and that itās likely to be LGās Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) pack, which is used in the AWD variants produced at Teslaās Shanghai factory.
Among the new features of the longer Model Y L is a larger 16-inch screen. This will also be available on all Model Y variants being delivered in Australia.Ā
There are also adjustable headrests for front seats, allowing for more comfort for the driver and front passenger.
In the second row, the L variant has two ācaptainās chairsā with retractable armrests. These can be controlled with the rear seat screen or a button to the side of the seat cushion.

Having sat and reviewed the car in China on a recent trip, itās quite a clever design, and I can see how families could benefit from it by allowing ease of access to the third row. In the third row, there are two seats and cup holders on either side.
With the second and third row seats folded down with buttons in the boot, owners can get up to 2,500 litres of boot space, making it the spacious Model Y variant.
Given the extended wheelbase of the car, which is 186 mm longer than a standard Model Y, the carās length is 4.96 metres.
On the road, the Model Y L has an upgraded suspension that uses continuously variable dampers found in the Model 3 and Model Y Performance variants, for a more comfortable ride.Ā
After Augustās unveiling, deliveries of this model started in September in China and are now heading closer to Australia in the coming months.
