GWM Ora sees another price cut as electric car price wars continue

GWM has again cut prices on its only electric car offering in the Australian market. The Ora electric hatchback has seen prices on two variants with the larger 63 kWh battery pack cut by up to $2,000.

The GWM Ora range is now priced at:

• Standard Range – $35,990 driveaway (same)
• Extended Range – $36,990 driveaway (down $2,000)
• GT – $43,990 driveaway (down $1,000)

Previously on GWM’s website, the company stated that pricing discounts were to end on July 31 but now the new price cuts are here to stay until September 30, 2024.

The latest price cuts make the Ora Extended Range, one of the cheapest long-range EVs on the market with a range. Its 63 kWh battery feeds the 126 kW electric motor and delivers up to 420 km of driving range.

This is up from the Standard Range variant which delivers 310 km of range from a smaller 48 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery.

According to Ben Elliston, who also contributes to The Driven, the Extended Range offers great value for money at that price point. The price difference of $1,000 between the Extended Range and the Standard Range variant equates to just $67/kWh (15 kWh more for just $1,000).

The Standard Range model of the Ora’s battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 41 minutes while the Extended Range can be charged in just over 31 minutes at the right fast charger.

So far in 2024, the GWM has sold 675 Ora hatchbacks, while its major rivals like the BYD Dolphin has sold 1,474 cars over the same period.

The leading brand in electric hatchbacks is of course MG with its MG4 having sold nearly 5 times as many cars than GWM, coming in with 3,178 sales until the end of July in 2024.

To help more buyers consider the MG4, the market leader this month has announced price cuts across its EV range while setting a new benchmark in new car warranty, now offering 10 years on many of its EV offerings in the country.

Local GWM Ora pricing and specs first came to light in April 2023. At that time, the Ora Cat came with many standard safety features, including features that helped it get EuroNCAP’s five-star safety rating based on the 2022 testing criteria.

The model also comes with a 7-year / unlimited km warranty, 5-year roadside assistance and 5-year Capped Price Servicing. The battery receives warranty coverage of 8 years.

New prices on the Extended Range and GT variants are expected to last until the end of September. With more competition on the way, the EV price wars are here to stay.
