MG is known for its affordable cars and in recent years has launched multiple successful electric models into the local market. Now, the brand is taking things up a notch by unveiling a two-door roadster called the Cyberster.
We got a chance to see it in person at a media preview held at Essendon MG in Melbourne last week before the car goes on a national roadshow. It is quite something and unlike anything else from the brand that bought us the MG4, Australia’s first “affordable” electric car.
From its scissor-opening doors, its drop-top roof and to its stunning acceleration, the Cyberster is designed to impress. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant produces 375 kW, helping the car get from 0-100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and has 20″ alloy wheels to keep it on the ground.
Although official specs of the battery weren’t shared, in the UK, the dual-motor Cyberster has a 77 kWh battery pack and delivers over 440 km of combined WLTP range.
MG has had good success in the Australian market with its first two EV offerings, the MG4 and MG ZS EV. Sales of the MG4 in recent months have stayed stable after the car won multiple awards across the country.
A total of 2,871 MG4 and 640 MG ZS EVs have been sold in the first 6 months of the year in 2024 with both models starting at under $40,000 driveaway.
The Cyberster could cost three times as much. Pricing of the new Cyberster has yet to be announced in Australia, but MG Motor Australia’s national sales manager Brad Chruszcz has previously said that “the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) range will fall between $100,000 and $150,000.”
For that money, the driver will sit in a 3-screen cockpit which is centred around the steering wheel. Sitting in the driver seat with the three screens is quite an experience, similar to that of high-end racing simulators. There is even a “supersport” mode.
There is also a premium 8-speaker Bose sound system on offer with multiple speakers integrated into the scissor doors as well.
Locally, the car will be available in 5 colours. These include White, Grey, Silver, Red and Yellow. The red car we got to see in person looked very striking and much bolder in person than in the pictures seen before the preview.
The MG Cyberster Roadshow has officially begun in both NSW and Victoria with a full schedule provided below. Pricing and full specifications will be available closer to the launch of the car which is expected to be in Q4 of this year.
