Ford has slashed the price of its first electric car in the Australian market – the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV – even before the first deliveries have been made.

The US car maker says the prices of all three variants of the Mach-E will be cut, and will now start at $72,990 before on-roads. This is down from the original price of the entry-level Select variant of $79,990.

Ford says it has taken orders for “several hundred” Mach-E electric SUVs – with the first deliveries due this month – and the price curt was driven by its desire to bring the car below the luxury car tax threshold.

ā€œThis price reduction is a major positive for our customers and demonstrates our commitment to delivering the best products and great value to our customers. As the EV market continues to evolve, we are responding to it,ā€ Ford Australia CEO Andrew Birkic said in a statement.

The $7,000 price reduction on the Select variant still leaves it above Australia’s best-selling EV, the Tesla Model Y, which starts at $64,500 before on-road costs.

The Mach-e Select variant includes a 71 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack that can deliver up to 470 km of range. The powertrain includes a single motor which is expected to deliver 198 kW and shares the torque figure of 430 Nm with the Premium variant.

The Premium variant price has been reduced to $86,990 from the original $91,665. The $4,675 reduction will help this variant to also come under the luxury car tax (LCT) threshold, offering greater savings to customers.

These also meet the federal electric car discount policy, which makes them exempt from fringe benefits tax (FBT) when bought under the novated lease scheme.

The Premium variant comes with a larger 91 kWh battery pack, delivering up to 216 kW of power and 430 Nm peek torque. This mid-spec variant also has a claimed range of 600 km.

The top-of-the-range GT variant also gets a price cut with the dual-motor equipped powerhouse starting at $104,990. This is down from $107,665, offering a saving of $2,675.

The GT will also use the same larger 91 kWh battery pack from the Premium but delivers 358 kW of power and 860 Nm of torque from its AWD (all-wheel-drive) powertrain.Ā

The Mach-E GT will also be Ford Australia’s fastest car to reach our shores, sprinting from 0-100km/h in 3.7 seconds. It will also include performance suspension and Brembo brakes set up to handle the stopping force needed after each sprint. This powertrain setup with the larger battery will deliver 490 km of range.

First local deliveries of the new Mach-E are expected to begin in December. The decision to pass on the price reductions to customers who have already ordered are at the discretion of the local dealer, a Ford spokesman said.
