Ioniq 5 adds another two “car of the year” awards to its trophy cabinet

The multiple award-winning Hyundai Ioniq 5 has added two more accolades to its trophy cabinet this week, driving away with the UK Car of the Year 2022 award from the British automotive press and the EV of the Year in the 2022 Hispanic Motor Press Awards.

Hyundai’s flagship midsize electric SUV has already taken home a mind-boggling number of awards since it was officially unveiled in early 2021 – including a Popular Science award, the German Car of the Year award, Green SUV of the Year award, and the inaugural Best Cars of the Year award, won jointly with the Kia EV6.

The Ioniq 5 has been no less popular here in Australia, selling out the small allocation of vehicles made available in October and with a waiting list that is now going to take many months to clear.

And, having already been recognised as the Best Family Car in the UK Car of the Year Awards shortlist, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was crowned best overall car by a panel of 29 expert judges from the likes of The Sunday Times, The Daily Express, The Telegraph, The Independent, Top Gear, Auto Express, CAR, Evo, and Business Car.

“The Ioniq 5 feels like the future of motoring, only it’s here today,” said John Challen, director of the UK Car of the Year Awards. “The design, performance, and practicality make it a fantastic proposition for those looking for an EV – and also a very worthy winner of the title ‘UK Car of the Year 2022’.”

“Quite where Hyundai has found so much space inside a family car is a mystery, but one we’re more than happy to ponder for many years to come,” added Alisdair Suttie, co-director in the Awards.

In addition to the spacious interior, which was universally praised by the judges, other features of note in its win was its 800-volt fast charging capacity which is able to charge the car from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes, along with the ease of entry into the electric vehicle space that the Ioniq 5 provides.

“The Ioniq 5 has really captured the attention of UK consumers, offering a stylish, premium full EV experience that appeals to almost every type of new car buyer,” said Ashley Andrew, managing director, Hyundai Motor UK.

At the same time but across the Pond in Los Angeles, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was also named EV of the Year in the 2022 Hispanic Motor Press Awards.
