The Hyundai Ioniq 5 has sold out again, after the South Korean carmaker released a second small allocation in Australia.
The new allocation went on sale last Thursday, and less than a week later its NSW and ACT allocations sold out ahead of further releases for other states.
A spokesperson for Hyundai’s Australian arm told The Driven that “all Ioniq 5s in the second allocation for NSW and ACT have sold. The ordering process for other states will follow shortly.”
In October, Hyundai was stunned when its first allocation sold out within hours. This time around, instead of releasing allocations for all states at the same time, Hyundai has avoided a repeat of the first-order process which saw its website encounter downtime leading to the order process being suspended temporarily.
Exact numbers of how many have been sold to date have not yet been divulged by the company, although a note on Drive suggests that 100 were allocated for NSW and ACT the second time around. These form part of an initial 400-strong order for Australia, adding to the 240 sold in the first allocation.
While these numbers are a fraction of its electric rival, the Model 3, the response to this offering and the Polestar 2 underlines the strong interest for electric vehicles in Australia – even when models like the Ioniq 5Â are not eligible for state EV rebates.
The Ioniq 5 has been handed numerous awards including a Popular Science accolade for its ability to charge devices using a “vehicle-to-load” (V2L) function, as well as German Car of the Year (GCOTY) award.
