Earlier this month, BYD, one of the fastest growing car brands in Australia had started offering a surprise $4,000 cash-back offer for its best-selling car in Australia, the Shark 6 plug-in electric ute, after sales surpassed 10,000 units in Australia.
BYD, one of the fastest growing car brands in Australia, Ā has announced that itās officially sold over 60,000 cars nationally in under three years of delivering cars locally.
This milestone was reached with the companyās founder, chairman and president, Mr Wang Chuanfu, presenting the 60,000th vehicle to an Australian customer in Melbourne last week.
Chuanfu said: āPersonally, itās very meaningful. It shows that Australian customers are embracing our vision to Cool the Earth by 1°C,” Chuanfu said.
āAustralia is a key market for the BYD Brand. It’s a highly competitive, advanced automotive market with an educated customer that values innovation, safety, and sustainability.
“Success here is a signal to the world that BYD vehicles can meet and exceed the expectations of mature markets. The learnings we gain from Australia help shape our products and approach globally.ā
Locally, BYDās original model lineup included the Atto 3 SUV, which in 2022 was the most affordable ground-up electric SUV.Ā

Following that, in 2023, it launched one of Australiaās cheapest electric cars, the BYD Dolphin hatchback. Later that year, the brand launched the Seal electric sedan, helping it get thousands of sales in the months that followed in early 2024.
In mid-2024, BYD unveiled its first PHEV, the Sealion 6, followed by the Shark 6 PHEV ute in the second half of the year, both models racked up thousands of pre-orders and subsequent sales.Ā
In 2025, BYD is forecasting 40,000 deliveries, having reached 23,355 sales in the first six months of the year.
This has been possible after price cuts and multiple model launches, making EVs more affordable than ever while increasing model availability.
In January this year, BYD offered Australiaās lowest-cost EV, starting at $29,990 with its BYD Dolphin hatchback, in a new EV price bombshell. That helped it gain quite a bit of momentum around the Dolphin and its other products.

Then, in February this year, it also launched the Sealion 7 SUV, which has already climbed the sales charts into the top 5 best-selling EVs in the country this year.
Earlier this month, it offered a surprise $4,000 cash-back offer for its best-selling car in Australia, the Shark 6 plug-in electric ute, after sales surpassed 10,000 units in Australia.
With multiple models in the works, such as the smaller electric SUV, the Atto 2, set to arrive in the fourth quarter and continued growth in the EV market, itās likely to achieve closer to 45,000 sales in 2025.
This would put BYD in the top 10 best-selling brands in 2025, becoming the first brand in recent Australian motoring history to make it into the top 10 best-selling brands in under 4 years.
