BYD delivers 150,000 cars in Australia in just 4 years, plans more expansion in regional areas

Earlier this year, BYD, one of the fastest-growing car brands in Australia, announced that it had officially sold over 100,000 cars nationally in under four years of delivering cars locally.

Now, 6 months later, the brand has delivered its 150,000th vehicle, a Seal 6 Touring wagon, to a family in Portland on the south-west Victorian coast from their BYD dealer in the town of Warrnambool.

According to BYD, the 150,000th owner, Tiffany, took delivery of her Seal 6 Touring just a few weeks after her partner took delivery of his BYD Seal Performance Sedan.

BYD Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, Stephen Collins, said the vast majority of recently opened BYD sales and service dealerships have been outside of the metro area, deep into regions. “That emphasis will continue for the remainder of the year and well into 2027 as we continue to build a dealer network that helps serve Australians wherever they live,” he said.

BYD is currently the second best-selling car brand in the country, and operates over 120 dealers across the country.

The company’s local arm expects to have more than 150 sales and service dealers before the end of the year, further pushing its dealer network into more regional centres.

It plans to expand into regions like Noosaville, Mareeba and Marooka in QLD, Mudgee in NSW, Seymour in VIC, the Barossa in SA and Rockingham in WA.

This expansion is expected to drive confidence in regional buyers who may be sitting on the fence about going full electric, knowing that they don’t currently have a dealer to service their local needs.

Locally, BYD’s original model lineup included the Atto 3 SUV, which in 2022 was the most affordable ground-up electric SUV.

In 2023, it launched one of Australia’s cheapest electric cars, the BYD Dolphin hatchback. Later that year, the brand launched the Seal electric sedan, helping it get thousands of sales in the months that followed in early 2024.

By mid-2024, BYD unveiled its first PHEV, the Sealion 6, followed by the Shark 6 PHEV ute in the second half of the year. Both models racked up thousands of pre-orders and subsequent sales.

Then, in February 2025, it also launched the Sealion 7 SUV, which has quickly climbed the sales charts to be the second-best-selling EV in 2025 and continues to be a great seller in 2026.

The second half of 2025 saw the launch of multiple new models, including Australia’s cheapest EV, the Atto 1, which currently is Australia’s cheapest car, starting at under $20,000 driveway.

BYD’s Atto 2 also joined the lineup during the same period and has seen thousands of sales in a couple of months, truly highlighting the demand for EVs from the brand.
