The Tasmanian state government has announced funding support for 24 tourism businesses across the state to install 50 electric vehicle (EV) charging points.
The $250,000 Electric Vehicle Destination Charging Grant Program, announced in June, offers grants of up to $2,500 per charger to small and medium tourism businesses across the state to install destination chargers for visitors staying overnight.
The program is being delivered over two $125,000 rounds, the first of which closed for applications at the end of August and announced successful recipients this week.
The allocations included three at the Bay of Fires Bush Retreat in Binalong Bay, four at Low Head Tourist Park, four at the Rosevears Hotel, and four at the Wilder Tasmania eco-retreat and venue in Gowrie Park.
The second round of the program will be announced early next year.
Tasmania’s minister for tourism, hospitality, and events, Roger Jaensch, said that the grants would help future-proof Tasmania’s tourism industry while delivering more convenience for EV drivers to explore every corner of the state.
“The first round of the Electric Vehicle Destination Charging Grant Program has been incredibly popular, showing Tasmania’s appetite to keep expanding our EV offerings,” said Jaensch.
“We are building an even better tourism industry by supporting businesses in regional areas to install overnight destination chargers, ranging from the Bay of Fires Bush Retreat to Queenstown’s West Coaster Motel.
“Tasmania’s compact geography and excellent roads make it ideal for EV roads trips. This new infrastructure will allow overnight guests to plan for a rest and recharge each day before heading out on their next adventure.”
