MG has confirmed Australian pricing for its first all-electric ute, with the MGU9 EV to start at $78,990 before on-road costs when it arrives later this year.
Australia will be the first market globally to launch the electric ute, which will offer 430km of WLTP driving range and a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity.
The U9 will initially be offered with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing 325kW and 700Nm, enough to take the big ute from 0-100km/h in a claimed 5.8 seconds. Power comes from a sizeable 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
Despite that large battery, maximum DC charging speed is limited to 115kW, with MG quoting around 42 minutes for a 20 to 80 per cent charge. AC charging is supported at up to 11kW.
That charging rate is unlikely to make the U9 one of the quicker EVs to replenish on a road trip, although its other specifications suggest MG has put considerable emphasis on making it work as a conventional ute.
Along with its 3,500kg braked towing capacity, the U9 has a 685kg payload and a substantial 236-litre front storage compartment.
There is also vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, delivering up to 6.6kW externally and 2.2kW from an internal outlet – potentially useful for camping, worksites or running equipment away from mains power.
The U9 also gets four-wheel electronic air suspension, while its unbraked towing capacity is rated at 750kg. MG says the vehicle carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
Inside, MG is pitching the U9 more as a lifestyle vehicle than a stripped-back work ute, with leather front seats, two 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 15W wireless phone charger and an eight-speaker JBL audio system. The driver’s seat includes heating, ventilation and massage functions.
MG Motor Australia marketing director Dimitri Andreatidis said the company sees an opportunity as utes increasingly double as family and recreational vehicles.
“The MGU9 EV brings the things people love about a ute, the space, flexibility and ability to get away for the weekend, and the comfort and refinement typically associated with a modern SUV, together with the benefits of a fully electric powertrain,” he said.
“For a lifestyle ute, that combination makes a lot of sense. You have the range to cover everyday driving and longer trips, the towing capacity for a caravan or boat, and the performance of an electric vehicle, without changing the way you use your ute.”
The $78,990 price puts the U9 into territory traditionally occupied by higher-spec diesel dual-cab utes, rather than attempting to compete as a budget commercial vehicle.
It will also give Australian buyers another battery-electric option in a segment where manufacturers have so far been much slower to move away from petrol and diesel than in passenger cars and SUVs.
MG says the U9 will begin arriving in Australia from the fourth quarter of 2026 and will be covered by the company’s seven-year warranty when serviced through its dealer network.
