Tesla has secured thousand of orders for its popular new six-seater Model Y L since production began in Shanghai in April, and has helped make it the best selling car of any type in Australia in each of the last two months.
Now, the first US-built Model Y L has rolled off the production line at Tesla’s Giga Texas factory, with the news sparking a welcome response from Tesla enthusiasts.
“The Long Wheelbase gives you that third row comfortably, perfect for bigger families without feeling cramped,” one said. “The interior is 🔥 and the captain’s seats are fantastic for families,” said another.
At the same time, pricing of the Model Y L was also shared, starting with a limited edition Launch Series variant starting at just under $A90,000.
For that, owners receive:
- – 1 year of FSD (Supervised)
- – 1 year of Supercharging
- – 1 year of Premium Connectivity
- – Choice of any paint colour, interior colour, and wheels for no additional payment
- – Launch Series badging
In Australia, the Model Y L, which is made at Tesla’s Shanghai factory, has almost 14 per cent more range than any other Model Y variant, and more space for the family in a longer three-row SUV setup. It is the longest range model of any Tesla EV to date.
This model is priced fairly well in our market, starting at $74,900 before on-road costs. That was well below what many were expecting, making it the most affordable three-row electric SUV that offers more than 5 seats.
It’s also the first Tesla EV in Australia to feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, with a 3.3 kW discharge rate, and comes with a large Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery pack capable of delivering up to 681 km of range on 19-inch wheels.
That’s over 13% more range than the current Dual-Motor Long Range model on sale in Australia, making it the longest range Model Y to date.
Underneath, the powertrain features an all-wheel-drive setup with up to 378 kW of power and 590 Nm of torque. It helps the car accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 201 km/h.
This model also features Tesla’s premium audio system with 18 speakers and a subwoofer, more than any other Model Y variant, which has 15 speakers on the Long Range and Performance variants.
Having driven this car in Melbourne in March this year, I can see the upgrades Tesla has incorporated into its latest model, including its efficiency. During our test, it was averaging 13.9 kWh/100km on freeway tests around Melbourne.
