In July 2025, BYD, one of the fastest-growing car brands in Australia, announced that it had officially sold over 60,000 cars nationally in under three years of delivering cars locally. Now, just 9 months later, the brand has delivered its 100,000th vehicle, a BYD Shark 6 ute, to a customer in Queensland.

BYD’s GM of Asia Pacific, Mr Liu Xueliang, personally handed the keys of the blue Shark 6 over to this customer from Brisbane.

BYD Australia COO Stephen Collins said the growth of BYD Australia over the last three and a half years has been remarkable.

ā€œAustralian motorists want stylish, practical and affordable new energy vehicles, now more than ever. It’s our pleasure to hand over our 100,000th vehicle today,ā€ he said in a statement.

ā€œWith over 100 sales and service centres around Australia, and growing, we’re proud to be building a national network that will support all BYD owners. We have exciting plans for continued growth in Australia.ā€

BYD’s sales have grown significantly in recent years, and of the 100,000 vehicles it’s delivered, over 64,000 have been BEVs. It’s worth noting that Tesla reached its 64,000th EV sale in 2023, after 10 years of selling cars in Australia.

Locally, BYD’s original model lineup included the Atto 3 SUV, which in 2022 was the most affordable ground-up electric SUV.Ā

In 2023, it launched one of Australia’s cheapest electric cars, the BYD Dolphin hatchback. Later that year, the brand launched the Seal electric sedan, helping it get thousands of sales in the months that followed in early 2024.

In mid-2024, BYD unveiled its first PHEV, the Sealion 6, followed by the Shark 6 PHEV ute in the second half of the year. Both models racked up thousands of pre-orders and subsequent sales.Ā

In January 2025, BYD offered Australia’s lowest-cost EV, starting at $29,990 with its BYD Dolphin hatchback, in a new EV price bombshell. That helped it gain quite a bit of momentum around the Dolphin and its other products.

Then, in February 2025, it also launched the Sealion 7 SUV, which has quickly climbed the sales charts to be the second-best-selling EV in 2025.

The second half of 2025 saw the launch of multiple new models, including Australia’s cheapest EV, the Atto 1.Ā

BYD’s Atto 2 also joined the lineup during the same period and has seen thousands of sales in a couple of months, truly highlighting the demand for EVs from the brand.

Also in late 2025, BYD launched its luxury offering under the Denza brand, which will offer NEV vehicles, including the recently confirmed Denza Z9GT, set to be Australia’s fastest-charging EV, supporting up to 1,500 kW of fast charging and the country’s first tri-motor EV. This model will land locally in the second half of 2026.

Given BYD has already made it to the top 10 best-selling car brands in 2025 and became the first brand in recent Australian motoring history to reach the top 10 in under 4 years, 2026 sales are already hinting at another blockbuster year for the brand.
