Xpeng, one of the fastest growing Chinese EV startups, has launched the refresh version of its most popular EV, the Xpeng G6 SUV, across the ditch in New Zealand ahead of the Australian launch.
Initial pricing and specs were first revealed by EVs and Beyond, with even the Performance variant available in New Zealand, which Australia missed out on.
Starting with the top-spec Performance variant, priced from $NZ72,990 or under $A63,000, and packing a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4.1 seconds. There is also a RWD Long Range variant with a 0-100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds. For comparison, the Xpeng G6 currently starts at $54,800 before on-roads.
The New Zealand G6 lineup now includes:
- RWD Standard Range – $NZ59,990
- RWD Long Range – $NZ63,990
- AWD Long Range Performance – $NZ72,990
The latest model delivers 10-80% charging in just 12 minutes with its 800 V architecture, getting it close to the Australian-delivered Zeekr 7X, which still holds the title for the fastest-charging production car.
The battery in the NZ-bound variants is the larger 80.8 kWh Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) battery pack.Ā This pack allows for max charging speeds of 451 kW at the right DC charger, which as of the time of writing, are not available publicly in Australia.
Compared to the current Australian model, there are multiple improvements to the chassis, with comfort levels improved due to the use of an upgraded double-wishbone suspension system with hydraulic damping.
On the self-driving tech in the new G6, the car now packs 8 Megapixel front and rear cameras and two Nvidia Orin intelligent driving chips, which help the car achieve high levels of vision-only self-driving system in China.
Other notable changes include a new light bar at the front of the car, updated bumpers, a new light strip with a spoiler at the rear, new paint options after removing Orange from the lineup, new wheels, ambient lighting with an upgraded interior, a bigger centre-screen and more.
This car is also a bit longer, with 5 mm added over the existing model, bringing the total length of the car to 4,758 mm.
The G6 SUV was unveiled at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show and at the time was dubbed the brandās most important car. The first customer deliveries of this model to Chinese customers started in the second half of the year.
For right-hand-drive markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia, deliveries of the first Xpeng models will begin in the second half of 2024.
Then in 2025, Xpeng further expanded into more right-hand-drive markets like the UK, starting with the G6 again as the market-entry model.
Locally, Xpeng sales so far have not been reported, so itās been unclear how the brand is developing in our local market, given the quality of the premium G6 SUV. Unofficially data compiled by carloop shows over 2,000 EVs delivered to Australian shores.
We look forward to seeing the launch of the new G6 locally in Australia but for now, Kiwi owners are likely to be the first to receive the broadest range.
