Electric vehicles sales in September appear to have have rebounded in a big way, largely off the back of strong performance from the refreshed Tesla Model Y, Ā with early data from September sales hinting a blockbuster month.

New data from EVC shows theĀ Tesla Model Y sold Ā 3,927 units in September 2025, itsĀ best result since March 2024, when it surpassed 4,300 sales. It is almost triple the 1,498 Model Ys sold in September, 2024.

The EVC data covers only Tesla and Polestar, who are no longer members of the FCAI. The data shows 4,899 Tesla and Polestar EVs were sold in September 2025.

The Tesla Model 3 also saw 736 units sold, up from 151 in the same month last year, helping the sedan gain some momentum in a market that’s now dominated by SUVs.

The latest data now puts the overall Tesla sales at over 22,600 in the first three quarters of the year, although that is down 26 per cent from the same period last year. The Model Y is now up 3.2 per cent for the year, with the Model 3 down 61.5 per cent.

Polestar recorded 236 sales during the month, making it the best month for the quarter. Its sales were led by the new Polesar 4, which sold 151 units, helping it get 1,033 sales for the rear-window-less model in 2025.

Polestar 3 outsold the Polestar 2, with 52 sales, versus 33, and it is the first time that has taken place.

Tesla’s strong sales result in September follows the successful launch of Tesla’s full-self-drivingĀ  (FSD) Supervised software, which captured attention nationally and at a global level, given Australia and New Zealand being the first right-hand-drive markets to have this tech available.

There have also been a good amount of incentives for buyers to buy a Tesla EV and these incentives are also seen across other brands too.

The impact of these is likely to be seen in the coming days when we receive FCAI’s data on how other brands performed. With early data showing solid rebound, we expect it to be a month of over 10% of vehicles in the market being an EV in September.
