Chinese automotive giant Chery has launched its second electric vehicle into the Australian market.
Last year, Chery launched the Chery 5, its first EV into the Australian market, with prices starting at under $40,000 driveaway. Now, Jaecoo, a sub-brand of Chery, has had its first EV model approved for sale in Australia, with pricing details to come early next year.
The news was shared on the Electric Vehicles for Australia Facebook group by EV enthusiast Will K, with the documentation of the approval showing the Jaecoo J5 EV.
According to the approval documentation, the Jaecoo J5 will come with a 155 kW front mounted motor.
This is the larger of the two motors available in international markets on the J5 EV. Although battery pack specs weren’t disclosed in the approval documentation, it’s expected to be a 60.9 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) pack.
This should be for 400 km of range on the WLTP cycle, and is on par with other affordable electric SUVs.
There are also more details in the latest approval on various dimensions and weights, with the J5 EV coming in near 4.4 metres in length.
It will also be coming in with 18-inch wheels, that are pretty standard of this size of SUV.
On the weight front, the Jaecoo SUV has a tare weight of 1,710 kg, making it one of the reasonably lighter electric SUVs on the market. For the powertrain, one front-mounted motor has been listed, coming in with a maximum 155 kW output and a peak torque of 288 Nm.
It will also have a maximum braked towing capacity of 750 kg as well as a running clearance of 180 mm, which is about 50 mm more than a hatchback such as the MG4.
On the styling front, it reminds us a lot of Land Rover, which has been popular with local SUV buyers in recent years.
Jaecoo as a brand was launched locally in May 2025. Within a few months, it’s gained quite a bit of popularity, mainly focusing on ICE and PHEV models. This will be the brand’s first EV offering in Australia.
More details and pricing for the Jaecoo J5 EV will be released closer to the launch, likely in Q1 2026.
