Earlier this year, MG in China teased the next version of the MG4, revealing the exterior design of the upcoming hatchback. This was followed by the model being sighted testing at a Tesla Supercharger in Sydney last month.
Now, this model has been approved for sale in Australia, coming in with two battery packs and multiple variants.
The news was shared on the Electric Vehicles for Australia Facebook group by EV enthusiast Will K, with the documentation of the approval showing eight variants of the upcoming MG4.
We also have a name for the new model, listed as āMG4 EV Urbanā in the paperwork.
According to the approval documentation, the MG4 EV Urban will come in either a 43 kWh battery pack or a bigger 54 kWh battery.
Both are expected to be Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) packs and if the last MG4 is anything to go by, they are also going to be quite thin as well.
We also have more details on some dimensions and weights, with the updated MG4 coming in at almost 4.4 metres in length.
The smaller battery pack variants have a tare weight of 1,460 kg while the second larger pack bumps that up to 1,520 kg.
Interestingly, when the MG4 was spotted testing last month, the registration of the spotted MG in white showed that it had a reported tare weight of 1520 kg, which was likely the 54 kWh battery pack equipped variant.

On the powertrain front, two front-mounted motors have been listed. First comes with a maximum 110 kW output, while the second offers more power at 118 kW.
Both have a maximum braked towing capacity of 500 kg as well as a running clearance of 130 mm, which is the same as the BYD Dolphin hatchback.
Unlike the current MG4ās charging port, which is found at the rear of the car, the upcoming model spotted here has it relocated, now sitting at the front of the hatch.
In August, MG announced that itās planning to bring a new MG4, which will feature a new front-wheel-drive layout, a move from the rear-wheel-drive offered on Australiaās most popular electric hatchback.
At the time, MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao shared: āThe new for 2026 front-wheel drive will be a completely different vehicle, perfect for the city. Balancing driver usage needs and production cost considerations of rear wheel drive, we saw the opportunity for an affordable FWD vehicle to complement the MG4 RWD and AWDā.

The report also suggested that two battery packs will be offered to ābudget-conscious buyersā who will need to wait until Q2 2026, to take delivery of the new model.
More details and pricing for the 2026 MG4 lineup will be released closer to the launch, likely during Q1 2026.
The MG4 has been one of the most successful EVs in the Australian market, selling more than 11,000 cars since its launch back in 2023. It’s by far the best-selling electric hatchback, while highlights the importance of this model.

Given the popularity of the current model, the new MG4 could also be one of the companyās best-sellers when it lands next year and we can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one in due course.
The latest sighting and report come only months after the company launched its S5 EV, an electric SUV for families, backed by MGās industry-leading 10-year warranty. Having seen the progress the brand has made to improve the cars infotainment and other functions over previous models, its upcoming electric models will be worth test driving.
