More than 7000 Tesla electric vehicles have been “recalled” in Australia due to a software fault that could injure drivers.
Australia’s federal transport department issued the recall over the weekend, warning that all 2025 variants of the Tesla Model Y were subject to an issue affecting the driver’s side automatic window and its safety system.
The problem has been detected in 7301 Tesla vehicles sold in Australia.
“Due to a software issue, the driver’s side window’s automatic protection system may not operate as intended and result in the window closing with excessive force on any obstruction, such as a body part,” the department said in a statement.
“If a body part is in the window space when the driver’s side window is closing, it can increase the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.”
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Tesla, although the issue can be rectified by installing an over-the-air software update issued by the company.
The latest recall mirrors a similar issue detected in the US in 2022 that led to a recall of almost 1.1 million Tesla vehicles, including Model 3 and Model S vehicles.
In that recall, America’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration noted that the vehicles’ automatic windows “may not react correctly after detecting an obstruction”.
The Australian recall is the largest issued for the US car maker this year after 297 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles were recalled due to a power steering issue in March.

I sure do hope this language is continued to be used for ALL brands that offer OTA software updates.
Not like actual recalls...
4 days ago - Ford has recalled over 800,000 vehicles due to issues with rear brakes, tail lights and air bag issues that could increase the risk of a crash.
2 days ago - Ford is recalling more than 355,000 of its pickup trucks across the U.S. because of an instrument panel display failure that's resulted in critical information, like warning lights and vehicle speed, not showing up on the dashboard.
3 days ago - Ford Motor is recalling nearly 500,000 vehicles in the U.S over a brake fluid leak issue, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Thursday. A ruptured hose in the brake system might cause fluid to leak, lengthening stopping distances, which increases the risk of a crash, the report said.
2 days ago - Ford Motor Company is recalling more than 105,000 Mustang cars in the U.S., citing improperly sealed panels that may let water seep in and cause external lights to fail, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on Friday.
But why go on. As of August, Ford has issued the most recalls of any other manufacturer: A whopping 104 of them! Those recalls span multiple model lines and encompass nearly two million vehicles.
But far que Tesla! You can't make cars for doo doo!
I wish all recalls were like Tesla's "recalls"
Not surprised
Care to elaborate?
Thank you for putting "recall" in quotes. 👍
Wow! Thousands! Recalled! Risk of injury! Sounds like a big flipping deal until you read a little deeper. Fingers getting caught in rolled up windows! Millions of customers losing fingers? Nope! A simple OTA software update and we're good to go again. Thanks for the drama, I have to be more discriminating with what sites I visit and what I read.
