Earlier this year, MG in China teased the next version of the MG4 on the parent company’s Shanghai Automotive group passenger car’s Weibo page, revealing the exterior design of the upcoming hatchback.
Now new details have emerged, showcasing it’s upgraded interior which features a cleaner layout, according to reports from a Chinese blog which were highlighted by CNC.
The new images revealed in the report showcase a steering wheel which is similar to the best-selling electric hatchback in Australia.
One thing new here is the gear selector which has been moved from the center floating island to a stalk behind the steering wheel.
This change will be welcomed by many as it frees up space around the center console of the vehicle, allowing for better storage option for owners of the upcoming model.
Another key change is to the centre screen which appears to be larger and now features a user interface (UI) designed in collaboration with the Chinese phone giant Oppo.
This was confirmed on the company’s Weibo page, which showcases phone mirroring tech built into the system.
Below the screen are four functional control buttons as well as a hazards light button. That would make it easier for owners who would like physical buttons.
There’s also a wireless charger for a mobile phone in the centre, which is easily accessible by either the driver or the front passenger.
In March this year, multiple teaser images showcased the icon model which has adopted a more curvy exterior design styling over the current model.
In the images shared, a purple hatchback with a white roof, hinting at two-tone paint options on the hatchback. This colour will also be a new to the MG4 lineup.
Looking at the back of the car, it’s got more of a conventional hatchback look with taillights reminiscent of the British Union Jack, referring to the MG brand’s British heritage which recently celebrated its 100 year anniversary.
The car also features new alloy wheels and a relocated charge port which now sits at the front of the hatch.
At the front, the lights are new with a narrower profile and integrate the daytime running lights. It also keeps the front splitter seen on some models of the current MG4.
On the specs of the upgraded model, not too much is known but earlier this year regulatory filings data from China’s ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT), the new model will be longer than the current version, coming in at 4.4 metres in length.
This new MG4 is also expected to be lighter, weighing in at 1,485 kg in its base variant, which will be powered by a 120 kW rear-mounted motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery.
For comparison, MG4’s Excite 51 variant is currently paired with a rear-mounted 125 kW motor. It comes equipped with a 51 kWh LFP battery pack, which delivers up to 350 km of WLTP range.
With the lighter weight of the new model, it’s expected to offer more range if a similar capacity battery pack is used.
This model was first launched in 2023 and sold over 11,000 sales as of the end of June 2025.
Given the popularity of the current model, the new MG4 if locally released, could also be one of the company’s best-sellers.
It’s likely to fall behind MG’s recently launched S5 EV SUV but is likely to do well if priced similar to current model which starts at $37,990 driveaway. Although it’s up from the September 2024’s special pricing of $30,990 driveway.
The latest reports expect the model to go on sale in China by September, with a likely launch in international markets to follow after that.
We’ll keep an eye on developments around the launch of this model along with specs and variants as they come to hand.
Update from MG Australia: “The recently released MG4 in China, whilst sharing the same name is not the same vehicle as the award-winning MG4 sold in Australia. This model is not built on the same platform as the existing MG4 and will not replace the current model. MG Motor Australia reviews all new global models and assesses whether they are right for Australian drivers and local driving conditions. In this instance, we have not confirmed whether this model will be coming to Australia.”
