MG reveals prices on upcoming premium IM5 and IM6 EVs – and they’re surprisingly low

Back in April, MG reported that it will launch a premium electric vehicle brand, called IM, at the Melbourne Motor Show with two electric models: IM5 sedan and the IM6 SUV.

Now, the brand has unveiled the pricing of both models, surprising some who were expecting these vehicles to match a premium price tag.

At launch, the driveaway prices of both the IM5 & IM6 are:

  • IM5 Premium and IM6 Premium (75KWH RWD) – $60,990
  • IM5 Platinum and IM6 Platinum (100KWH RWD) – $69,990
  • IM5 Performance and IM6 Performance (100KWH AWD) – $80,990

On MG’s configurator, the current estimated delivery time for both models is showcased as 12 weeks which estimates late Q3 or early Q4 deliveries this year.

“We are now pleased to introduce IM Presented by MG Motor to the Australian market, following its successful preview at the Melbourne Motor show in April,” MG Motor Australia’s CEO, Peter Ciao, said.

“The IM5 and IM6 will deliver the most innovative, AI inspired, cutting-edge features, and high performance, blended seamlessly with premium design and interior finishes.

“We welcome prospective owners to place their reservation for the next generation of electric mobility from today.”

Looking into the drivetrains on offer, both the sedan and the SUV will be coming with either a single-motor RWD variant or a dual-motor AWD model.

When it comes to batteries, two options are available, with most variants featuring the larger 100 kWh battery pack.

The IM models will also feature one entry-level RWD variant, equipped with a 75 kWh battery pack, which delivers a 505 km NEDC range or 490 km on the WLTP cycle on the IM5 sedan.

On the IM6, this battery delivers up to 450 km of range on the WLTP cycle.

The larger packs deliver more range on both models. For the IM5, it’s 575 km on the Performance variant, while the Platinum gets up to 655 km of WLTP range.

30-80% charging times are as short as just over 15 minutes for the larger battery, while the smaller battery will charge as much in 20 minutes.

These batteries feed RWD and AWD powertrains, which can deliver up to 572 kW of power in the Performance AWD variants.

These top-spec cars can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.48 seconds for the L6 SUV, while the sedan comes in at a blistering 3.2 seconds, making it one of the fastest sedans on the market.

Both tech-focused models will land in the market with a few unique features, including a four-wheel steering system, helping lower the turning radius of the mid-sized cars to one of much smaller cars like the hatchbacks.

On top of that, they feature other intelligent driving features not found in any local models, including “One Touch Reverse”. This helps guide drivers out of tricky spots by retracing the last 100 metres.

There are also several intelligent parking features designed to make inner-city parking easier for all drivers.

Both models will be available later this year with premium finishes and a large 26.3-inch screen, as well as a secondary 10.5-inch screen.

When it comes to premium sound, 20 speakers strategically placed around the cabin deliver high-quality acoustics.

Two interior options and five exterior paint colours will be offered across the lineup – Dover beige and Highland grey.

Both cars come with a seven-year warranty when serviced within the IM dealer network across the country.

They are expected to arrive at dealers over the coming months, and we look forward to getting behind the wheel of them to see how MG’s push into the premium EV market drives on our local roads.

One thing is for sure: the sharp pricing of these tech-driven premium models will certainly bring new customers to the brand and to EVs.
