Tesla has produced its eighth millionth EV just 9 months after producing its 7th millionth unit globally. The latest milestone was achieved at Tesla’s European factory in Berlin and happened to be the new Tesla Model Y in red.
Tesla shared a photo of the new Model Y on the company’s X page with a picture of the car surrounded by the GigaBerlin team. The caption on the photo said: “Produced our 8 millionth vehicle at Giga Berlin”.
Behind the team, one new Tesla Model Y car can be seen finished as the vehicles roll off the production line.
The eighth millionth car took around nine months after the seven millionth EV was produced by the brand in October 2024.
It also shows how far the company has come after it took 12 years to produce its first million vehicles.
Of the eight million EVs produced, over 120,000 of these vehicles have landed in Australia over the last 10 years.
Over 110,000 of these have been produced after Tesla switched the Australian supply plant from Fremont to Shanghai back in 2021.
These make up the Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, which have been very popular with drivers looking to make the switch to an EV in Australia.
As of 2023, the Tesla Shanghai plant is the only supply plant for Australia, with Model S and Model X vehicles no longer supplied into the local market from Fremont, California.
Back in 2022, Tesla first opened its European factory in Germany, which currently produces Model Y vehicles to various left-hand-drive markets in Europe.
Tesla continues to manufacture and deliver the Model 3 from the Shanghai plant into the European market, which is its key export hub globally.
The latest milestone arrives at an interesting time, as the company prepares to launch its more affordable models and begin its rideshare operations in Austin, Texas, next week.
Having produced 8 million cars is a big achievement given the challenges it faced when scaling production of the Tesla Model 3. According to Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, during the ramp up of the Model 3, it once went through “production hell” at its Fremont factory in California.
Since then, millions of its electric vehicles (EVs) have hit the roads around the world, including the Model Y, which has been the world’s best-selling car for multiple years in a row.
