In September last year, MG took the EV industry in Australia by surprise by reducing the price of its MG4 electric hatchback to its lowest levels ever at just $30,990 drive-away, a move that sparked huge interest and thousands of new customers.
Now, the brand has teased the next version of the MG4 on the parent company’s Shanghai Automotive group passenger car’s Weibo page, revealing three views of the upcoming hatchback, which appears to be curvier than the current MG4.
The teaser images show a purple hatchback with a white roof, hinting at two-tone paint options on the hatchback.
At the rear, it’s got more of a conventional hatchback look with taillights reminiscent of the British Union Jack, referring to the MG brand’s British heritage.
The car also features new alloy wheels and a relocated charge port which now sits at the front of the car. The front lights are new with a narrower profile and integrate the daytime running lights. It also maintains the front splitter seen on some models of the current MG4.
On the specs of the upgraded model, they’ve been kept under wraps but recent regulatory filings data from China’s ministry of industry and information technology (MIIT), the new model will be longer than the current version, coming in at 4.4 metres in length.
The new MG4 is also expected to be lighter, weighing in at 1,485 kg in its base variant, which will be powered by a 120 kW motor and a lithium iron phosphate (LFP). That setup will limit its top speed to 160 km/h.
MG4’s Excite 51 variant is currently paired with a rear-mounted 125 kW motor, which helps the car accelerate to 100 km/h from a standstill in just 7.7 seconds. It also gets a 51 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, which delivers up to 350 km of WLTP range.
With the lighter weight of the new model, it’s expected to offer more range if a similar capacity battery pack is used.
The current MG4 was the first in MG’s electric line-up to use MG’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) with a skateboard-like design and a rear-wheel drive powertrain paired with a thinner battery design.
This model was first launched in 2023 and has helped the brand rake in nearly 10,000 sales as of the end of February 2025.
Given the popularity of the current model, the new MG4 is expected to be one of the company’s best-sellers. We expect the model to go on sale in China in the coming months, with a likely arrival in the Australian market in the second half of 2025.
Local pricing and specifications are expected to be announced closer to the launch.
