Lowest cost variant of refreshed Tesla Model Y launch series sells out in Australia

Last month, Tesla launched its new Model Y, with Australia being one of the first countries to allow customers to order one with two special launch edition variants.

Now, its cheapest and most popular RWD launch series variant, which started at $63,400, has sold out, hinting at huge local demand for the new Model Y.

This is highlighted in the updated Tesla Model Y online configurator, which now only has the Long Range AWD launch series model available, starting at $73,400.

A current Tesla owner, Bill, interested in purchasing the new Model Y, shared his account to confirm that the RWD model has officially been sold out in Australia.

“I was talking to a Tesla rep on Thursday about both models, and he told me that the RWD model was sold out and only the AWD would be available. Then, after I got off the phone with him, the RWD is not listed anymore.”

The launch series is a limited edition Model Y with bespoke features to celebrate the start of production of the refreshed model. It was offered in all markets globally, including Australia. There is no indication of how many units of this variant were on offer.

As part of the launch series, customers with pre-orders will receive a rear liftgate, puddle light, doorsill plate, complimentary paint option, and more.

For dual-motor AWD cars, an acceleration boost feature that increases the car’s acceleration is also added at no extra cost. It is usually priced around $3,000 in the Tesla app as a software upgrade.

These special edition cars start at $63,400 for the single-motor RWD variant, while the dual-motor Long Range AWD variant bumps that to $73,400 before on-road costs.

These prices increased by $7,500 on the RWD and $3,500 on the AWD variants of the 2024 model, which are also currently on special, with Tesla clearing out existing inventory.

This new car has been highly anticipated over the older car. It features improved range, faster acceleration, updated exterior styling with new paints, interior lighting, ventilated front seats, rear passenger controls and entertainment screen, powered second-row reclining seats, upgraded suspension, upgraded acoustic glass for a quieter ride and much more.

Over in China, Tesla has received over 170,000 orders for the car within 6 weeks of the car’s sale. 100,000 of these orders were within the first fortnight of the new Model Y going on sale, highlighting the popularity of the Model Y.

The latest update comes on the same day Tesla began deliveries of the new Model Y in China, with Australian buyers expecting to start receiving the first deliveries in May.

Just over a week ago, a newly refreshed 2025 Tesla Model Y vehicle was spotted in Australia. These were on the back of a vehicle transporter, likely heading to showrooms for local customers to experience.

Given the latest update on the RWD launch series selling out locally, Tesla will likely be bringing the standard refreshed Model Ys to the configurator in the coming weeks with pricing expected to be cheaper than the launch series models.
