EVs account for 9 out of 10 new passenger car sales in Norway in 2024

Even though new car sales in Norway barely topped the numbers seen in 2023, electric vehicles (EVs) nevertheless continued to dominate, accounting for 89 per cent of all new passenger car sales throughout 2024.

New figures published earlier this month by the Opplysningsrådet for veitrafikken (OFV), Norway’s Road Traffic Information Council, revealed that sales of new passenger vehicles in 2024 hit 128,691, only 1.4 per cent up on 2023.

Of these, however, 114,400 were electric cars, or around 88.9 per cent, up from 82.4 per cent in 2023.

Its important to note that these numbers are for fully electric vehicles, with hybrid and plug-in hybrids reported separately with 5.3 per cent and 2.7 per cent of all new passenger car sales in Norway for 2024.

Combining all electrified vehicles, then, works out to 96.9 per cent of all new car sales.

This compares favourably to 2023, with all new electrified passenger cars accounting for 96.3 per cent of all sales. Specifically, plug-in hybrid sales amounted to 7.9 per cent in 2023, but only 2.7 per cent in 2024, while basic hybrids fell slightly from 6 per cent to 5.3 per cent.

In both cases, however, it looks as if fully electric vehicles are eating into hybrid numbers.

Unsurprisingly, American EV darling Tesla remained the most favoured car brand, with its Model Y selling 16,858 units in 2024, accounting for 13.1 per cent. This was followed by the Tesla Model 3, the Volvo EX30, Volkswagen ID.4, and Toyota bZ4X.

Tesla therefore remained the leading brand in Norway, with a total of 24,259 models sold in 2024, accounting for 18.9 per cent of all new passenger cars sold. However, this is down from 20 per cent, highlighting the growth of other major brands such as Volkswagen, Toyota, and Volvo.
