Geelyās upcoming electric SUV, the EX5, has now received approval to be sold in Australia with a filing now detailing three variants could be on their way to the market.
Geely has stakes in multiple brands such as Volvo cars, Polestar, Zeekr, and Lotus, and has been rapidly rolling out EVs under its own Geely brand into many markets around the world. This will be its first into the Australian market.
The EX5 packs some innovative technologies, including an 11-in-1 powertrain and cell-to-body (CTB) technology. It also sits on Geely’s latest GEA electric architecture with the front-mounted motor allowing a 0-100 km/h in under 7 seconds, outpacing the BYD Atto 3. We first drove the EX5 in China recently, and you can find our report here.
The documentation for the approval states that the new model will feature a 160 kW powertrain. This is from a front-mounted motor, which the EX5 is known to have.
Weights have also been shared of the approved variants which range between 1,662 kg – 1,765 kg, making it one of the lighter electric SUVs on the market.
This should improve the efficiency of the drivetrain which we recently learnt was at 11.9 kWh/100 km on the NEDC cycle and slightly higher on the stricter WLTP cycle.
Geelyās EX5 is a fairly spacious family electric SUV, coming in at 4,615 mm in the approval paperwork. Itāll also be coming with two wheel sizes which are 18 and 19 inches respectively.
On the 18-inch setup, the tyres are 225/55R18 while the 19-inch tyres have the 235/50R19 specification.
Running clearance data on the variants was also included in the approved documentation which ranges between 148 – 168 mm. This would be fairly close to the ground clearance figures of the EX5.
In China, two different battery packs are available with the first 49.52 kWh pack to deliver of 440 km of CLTC range. A bigger pack with 60.22 kWh delivers 530 km of NEDC range, which is expected to be in the mid-400 km of real-world WLTP range.
Charging speeds on the battery include 11 kW AC or by DC fast charging at speeds of up to 100 kW which will ensure a quick 30-80% charging time of 20 minutes.
The new packs are lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) in chemistry and contain Geelyās short Blade batteries with an energy density of 192 Wh/km, which is above BYDās current Blade battery.
Geelyās EX5 is expected to launch locally in the first half of 2025 with pricing and detailed specifications released closer to that time.
