GAC, an Australian-bound automotive giant, has unveiled a $A21,400 electric hatchback with 600 km range, that is destined for international markets.
The new hatch, aimed at competing with the very popular MG4, was launched at the Guangzhou Auto Show and will be dubbed the Aion UT.
The newest model in the Aion line up will feature a 100 kW motor which can hit speeds of up to 150 km/h.
This will be paired with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack which will be able to deliver around 600 km of NEDC range.
That’s likely to be closer to 500 km on the commonly used WLTP cycle which is more than many rivals at that price point.
The Aion UT has a sloping front design along with a curved rear hatch and has a length of 4,270 mm.
At that length which is comparable to other similar hatchbacks and will likely compete with the MG4, GWM Ora and the BYD Dolphin.
The UT features a minimal design and two screens.
The UT interior features a minimal design and two screens. The larger infotainment screen has a 14.6-inch touch display while a smaller 8.8-inch screen is also found behind the steering wheel.
The unveiling of this model is welcomed by many including local EV enthusiasts looking to see more smaller EVs on Australian roads.
Sydney EV, a local EV fan and a reader of The Driven posted on X: “GAC Aion #EV expected to come to #Australia! not a bad looking car! small hatch class, so going after the BYD Dolphin market. no real range details, but claims of up to 800KM!! if so, that would be amazing! even if it managed 60% of that! will be epic range.”
Late last month, GAC surprised many by attending a Mobility industry event in Melbourne where the brand highlighted its entry into the Australian market
Initially, GAC plans to bring the Aion V electric SUV to Australia followed by multiple other models. The UT hatchback could very well be the second one heading our way.
The Aion UT will start deliveries in China by Q1 2025 with international markets soon to follow.
Given the recent success of models like the MG4, if priced correctly, the Aion UT could very well be a very popular model if it heads to Australia. Afterall, note everyone is after a SUV.
