Tesla Robotaxi event labelled by Elon Musk as “one for the history books”

Tesla has been at the cutting edge of electric vehicle technology for over a decade, revealing multiple vehicles that have propelled the EV revolution. Now, the company is only a fortnight away from unveiling its next new product, the Tesla Robotaxi which Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO is already labelling as “one for the history books”.

Tesla’s Robotaxi is expected to be unveiled in Los Angeles California on October 10 with the official invitation to shareholders going out earlier this week.

This car is expected to offer an Uber ride-hailing experience without the need for a driver and has the potential to revolutionise the transportation system globally.

Researcher and futurist, Tony Seba has previously told The Driven: “The day that we get level four, autonomous technology ready and approved by regulators, when that converges with on-demand, and electric transportation we will get what we call transportation as a service (TAAS).”

Without drivers, the cost to deliver the service would be far lower than current taxi or ride-hailing services with some estimating it to be lower than the cost of a bus ticket.

Seba has also alluded to these savings: “Some call it Robo taxi. Essentially, when that happens the cost per mile of transportation is going to drop by anywhere from 10 to 20 times.”

The Robotaxi is a product that Musk has been spruiking for years and the company has made great strides in offering its full-self-driving package to customers in North America.

Earlier this year, multiple sightings of a Tesla Model 3 spotted testing with no mirrors and new camera locations were sighted.

At the time of this sighting, it was unclear if the spotted car was being tested as part of the upcoming Robotaxi model which was set to be announced on August 8.

It was then pushed back by two months as Musk requested changes to its design and to showcase a few other innovations from the company.

With a lot hanging on this event for the company,  this event will be watched closely by many including Tesla’s employees, policymakers, shareholders plus others looking at the future of cleaner transportation.

  • Remember how Musk said in 2019 that Tesla would be operating a fleet of Robo Taxis by the end of 2020? It seems like the author of this article has ignored all journalistic principles and continues to regurgitate Musk claims as fact, whereas we know Elon has an extensive history of lying or simply underestimating the difficulty of doing something.

    • eeeekkk
I wouldn't want to bring attention to what the CEOs of GM, Ford, Toyota, VW or Volvo have said relating to dates either then!

        • True! The rich assholes who genuinely want to save the planet (e.g. Musky) are far better than the rich assholes who don't give a flying f**k about anything but themselves and their own hollow ego (e.g. Trump)!

          • I don't know if you have been avoiding current events on purpose, but space karen has been spending as much time recently, if not more, trying to get Trump elected as he has managing Tesla so this doesn't make much sense.

          • Hahaha!
You won't gain much traction (sorry) on here rubbishing yanks.
They are forever chemicals. Try inventing a filter, that can't be hacked.
            Hahaha!

          • It's obviously a sales strategy. You have to literally lick Trump's b*tth*le to be accepted by his cultwashed moron red-hatted disciples. Imagine if that 30-40% of the potential market boycotted your product! The other 60-70% are fine and reasonable people who use the actual merits of the thing to decide.

          • Your good/bad reductionism is based on archaic religious dogma.

How many hypocrites does it take to fill a church?

Musk wants to save the world?
No, he wants ignorant cashed up peasants to fund his trip to Mars where he will find the elixir of life and reign forever. Alone. Except for a few sycophants to consume his 'leavings'

            You call him Musky.
            Hahaha!
He would have you whipped for that and you would probably enjoy it.

          • The biggest problem facing us - even more than climate change because it has essentially caused that - is overpopulation.
I can’t enthuse too much over Musk, who seems to think that churning out babies doesn’t have consequences.

    • Remember when Musk said a Tesla would drive coast-to-coast USA without a driver by the end of 2017? 🤣

  • What happens if the 'taxi' goes rogue? Will it be pulled over by a robocop and asked to show me your software?

    • I have significant distaste for the man too. But were talking about the robo taxi thing here. And that is actually quite an interesting bit of societal change.

      • "an interesting bit" - surely you're being understated/British?

I reckon Tesla's robo taxi will kick societal whatsit right up the thingthang!

          • My prediction is massively less traffic congesting. If all cars on the road were robotaxis, we wouldn't need stop signs or traffic lights. They have an instantaneous reaction to traffic conditions - not the multi-second! reaction that slow old humans have.

          • The stuff of science fiction.
            Less than a bus fare?
            Bald faced lies.

Try instantly stopping from 100 kph. Cant be done. I know that dragonflies are bizarre creatures that seem to defy physics laws but their unique abilities will never be replicated by a machine with a human inside.

          • Your prediction is worthless then. We still have vehicles on the road from the mid 20th century.
And what about, you know, people? Pedestrians and bicycles are banned in your scenario? I'll just hail a robotaxi to cross the street.
It's just not going to happen and if it did, it would be a dystopian nightmare.

          • Sovereignty?
We need to find another word.
That one just means peasants bowing to an unelected ruling class, who are not demonstrably 'better'

    • Great! That style of "feelings" keeps TSLA stock price low so that we who are unemotional can keep buying, sans conniptions!

      • I guess that you are unaware many people find your proselytising repulsive.
Perhaps you are American? If not, you might as well be.
Just another coward hiding under mommy's skirt, desperate to be on the 'winning' side.
Hence your display name. Ugliness personified.

        • That's a strangely emotional & aggressive reply to a fairly benign comment. I'm not smart enough to invest in direct shares, but what Ren Stimpy said probably has a fair bit of merit.

          • Cecil as I said I don't do direct shares. I don't know what Tesla's share price is or what it should be. However if Elon Musk's behaviour and the resultant public dislike of him means that the Tesla share price is lower than it should be then it might be a good buy.

          • You might have missed the back story. Mr Stimpy has accused and abused me numerous times because he thinks he knows me.
I try to remain civil. He doesn't bother.

    • I just watched those AMCI videos (parts 1-3), they are terrible. Each one only has one good move and one bad one and they are really short with way less context provided than good FSD videos always have.

    • Now, now. An angel cries every time you take his name in vain.
      And
He's compiling a list of the people who diss him, a bit like santa but more like satan.

      • It's the company - NOT the man - that you should be bitching about!

But, as it turns out, the company is one of those fair dinkum solid fucking titanium rare finds! So you poor old whingers don't have a fucking leg to stand on!

        • No I wouldn't be so silly. But when I see an opportunity I will give it a good nudge. Don't forget that this stock has already delivered BIGTIME for its early investors!!!!!!!!

  • Oh gawd… why do “futuristic” vehicle renders always show completely ridiculous low-profile tyres with 10mm sidewalls, and full wheel covers? 🙄

    • I'll bite.

      Lack of imagination?
      Never seen the Jetsons?
      White wall equals gangsta rap?
Low profile means dont care about comfort?

But on the last one, unless you have all wheel steering there is no particular need to have the rear wheels fully exposed.
Unless you are trying to do what the vw beetle (or clone) did recently. Make it difficult to tell the front from the back. i wish I'd kept a screenshot.

  • The robotaxi has many implications for transport and how we use cars.
For one example, having witnessed the death of Australian 'pub culture' I'm optimistic.
The connector? Well, they brought in 'random' breath testing,
-usually staking out the pubs and music venues for sitting ducks.
    (That's another topic of conversation).
But pubs and parties declined dramatically, rather sadly ending an era of fun and frivolity.
Any band with regular gigs gets a lot better over time. And so they did...
If cheap, autonomous transport means we can go out and enjoy a few drinks again,
we may see a revival of the sort of fun we used to have in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
Call me hopelessly nostalgic, but it could be a thing.
Just don't vomit in the car.

    • Quite a broad sweep there Mr Us. From what i can glean from your rambling post, the main question seems to be, how can i get home cheaply and safely from any venue after getting drunk? Some pubs offered dedicated buses. Clearly failed.

One reason for the death of pub rock is gentrification. A lot of pubs were built before the suburb expanded. People buy cheap property next to a hotel with renovation in mind and making a tasty profit, exacerbating the problem. A venue that has been providing live music for decades is now being hit by council with noise complaints from new neighbours who are probably not local and should never have been allowed to purchase, knowing that music loud and legal lived next door. Selfish pricks.

Learning to drive while drunk is a rite of passage for most Ozzies and is the only thing that separates us from the salamander. How often my car seems to know the way home better than me is a mystery. A new scratch on the bumper is a victory scar.

My hunch is that inserting robotaxis into old terrain would be a waste, being more suited to new environments that are designed to accommodate them. Mars or Newtown Saudi Arabia?

Music, alcohol and cars can be a fatal mix.
The only safe combination is getting drunk while listening to the Cars, in your loungeroom
