A new electric SUV has been spotted in recent approved vehicles register which hints at the entry of another EV brand into the Australian market.
Deepal, a sub-brand of China’s automotive giant, Changan, has had its S07 electric SUV approved for the Australian market, giving it the thumbs up to be offered to Australian customers.
It has similar dimensions to the Tesla Model Y, is likely to be priced below $50,000, and will offer up to 480 kms in range.
The approval was first discovered by EV enthusiast Will K and the S07 filing was shared on the Electric Vehicles for Australia Facebook page.
According to the filing documents, this SUV will be offered in a 160 kW variant and has a length of 4,750 mm, a width of 1,930 mm and is 1,625 mm high.
On top of that, approval for up to 1,500 braked towing is also provided, making this EV ideal for those looking at towing a trailer.
For comparison, the Tesla Model Y is exactly the same in length but slightly less wider than the S07.
The latest model has been on sale in China and a right-hand-drive market like Thailand for just under a year, helping it be in the top-10 best selling EVs in the country.
In Thailand, the Deepal S07 is priced under the Model Y and is expected to be pitched below the $50,000 price point if it does make it into the local market in the coming months.
According to the Thai website, this SUV can deliver up to 485 km of range. That’s delivered by a 66.8 kWh Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery pack.
This battery can also be charged from 30-80% in 35 minutes and the car also offers vehicle to load capability.
On the colours, although photos of only while paint were seen in the Australian approval document, a total of 6 colours are available in Thailand.
This is an exciting development as it shows the focus new EV brands have on the Australian market, providing potentially more options to drivers. We look forward to test driving the new Deepal S07 when it lands in the coming months.
