Residents across Sydney’s eastern suburbs will soon gain access to 250 new electric vehicle (EV) charging spaces which the local councils hope to have installed by the end of 2025.
The new Charging the East initiative will see 250 new public EV charging spaces rolled out across the Randwick, Waverly, and Woollahra city council areas, increasing the number of EV charging spots across the three councils from 100 to 350.
Rollout of the new EV charging spaces will be bolstered by a combined $1 million from the New South Wales state government’s recently announced investment in public kerbside charging.
The three councils will install a combination of 91 kerbside AC and fast DC charging spaces, expanding the council-owned network, while private companies will install a further 162 charging spaces across the three councils, similarly backed by government grants.
“Providing infrastructure to support residents to go electric is the single greatest thing local governments can do to reduce emissions in our areas, and we know there’s significant demand for EVs in our communities,” said Philipa Veitch, Randwick Mayor.
“There are already around 4,000 electric vehicles on roads across Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra LGAs, and that number has been doubling year on year.
“But while lots more residents would love to switch to an electric vehicle, the relatively small number of public charging facilities has, until now, presented a barrier for people living in apartment buildings and homes without off-street parking.”
