The sales of electric cars in Australia have seen another strong month in June, driven in part by recent price cuts by a number of key EV players in the market, including the market leader, Tesla as BYD sales saw a dip.
The latest data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and Electric Vehicle Council shows that 9,939 full-battery electric cars were sold in Australia in June.
This was a significant rise from the 9,120 sales during the last month in May and helps achieve over 50,000 sales in 2024 so far, a 14 per cent increase over the same period a year ago.
However, the market share of EVs continues to stagnate, largely due to record sales of petrol, diesel and hybrid cars. In June, EVs made up 8.3% of all vehicles sold in the country. This is below the 9% EV market share months we saw back in February and March.
Looking at the whole market, some 119,659 vehicles were sold, making June the traditionally high end-of-financial year month, the best so far in 2024.
Tesla led the way in EV sales, with its Model Y leading the charge as Australia’s best-selling EV in the month. It took pole position with 2,906 sales, and was up from last month’s disappointing total of 1,609 sales.
The Model Y also made in the top 5 vehicle sales during the month, coming behind the usual top-selling utes, Toyota Rav4 and Mitsubishi Outlander.
This goes to show the high interest in SUVs and is also a result of the price cuts in May across both Tesla’s models. Tesla’s Model 3 also performed well with 1,777 sales in June.
BYD Seal saw its sales drop from the highs in May. During June 706 BYD Seal sedans made it onto local roads.
The fourth spot was taken by the newest model in the top 10 EV sales charts during June. This was from the Volvo EX30 which continued to perform well with 420 sales in June.
Rounding out the top 5, the MG4 saw 395 sales in the month, edging out the Polestar 2, which had 356 sales.
The BYD Atto 3 was in the 7th spot after receiving a price cut and the introduction of the 2024 model in June.
Kia’s mid-sized electric SUV, the EV5 also made it’s debut with 40 sales in June and is expected to ramp up in the coming months.

The Driven is waiting to hear back from various manufacturers for sales of some EV models and this list will be updated once they’re received.
On the back of this result, FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said: “We hope to break the significant milestone of 100,000 EV sales in 2024,” with several new models and variants due to enter the market later this year.
