Motoring group unveils second regional EV charging “super-site”

The Royal Automobile Association of South Australia has unveiled the second of its electric vehicle (EV) charging “super-sites” in the heart of the state’s south east in the tourist city of Mount Gambier.

Located halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, Mount Gambier has been a tourist destination for decades, and the new EV charging hub, located just down the road from the city’s Cave Garden Sink Hole, will provide tourists with the ability to charge their EVs in as little time as 10 minutes.

The new charging site consists of nine EV charging bays and 10 charging plugs with a mixture of seven CCS2, one CHAdeMO plug, and two Type 2 Charging plugs, as well as an accessible charging bay.

The launch of the RAA’s Mount Gambier super-site comes less than a fortnight after the organisation opened its first super-site at Port Pirie, 225 kilometres north of Adelaide, pictured above.

Both sites feature 200kW ultra-rapid chargers that are capable of charging an EV in as little as 10 to 40 minutes.

RAA CEO Nick Reade says the Mount Gambier Charging Hub marks the completion of RAA’s two planned super-sites across its 140-site network.

“As EV ownership continues to grow in SA and across the border, South Australia’s charging infrastructure will need to keep pace, and that’s exactly why we are building these larger sites along key destination routes,” says Reade.

“The South East is already an extremely popular tourist destination for South Aussies and visitors traveling from interstate, and the launch of this super-site will certainly put Mount Gambier on the map for EV drivers.”

The RAA EV charging network currently boasts 133 sites out of the planned 140 network, with the remainder to be completed and operational by year’s end.
