MG’s Cyberster electric convertible spotted up close in Sydney

MG has had a few firsts for EVs in the Australian market. The brand launched Australia’s most affordable EV in the form of MG ZS EV back in 2020 and then the sub-$40,000 (before on roads) MG4 electric hatchback in 2023.

It is now gearing up to launch the first electric convertible, the Cyberster, which has been spotted up close in Sydney NSW.

A red MG Cyberster was spotted by an EV enthusiast Michael T before being shared by a reader of The Driven, Zapped, on X. 

The photos show a red two-door convertible with the front MG badge being covered by a black plastic wrap. The outline of the MG badge can be seen underneath the wrap.

On the rear, the indicator lights make a prominent appearance with these being shaped as arrows facing the direction of the intended turn.

The rear also shows a sign written in Chinese which when translated by another EV enthusiast ARM on X states “Engineering development vehicle”.

Looking at the registration records, it’s discovered that this Cyberster was first registered in early March, 2024. It also has a tare weight of 1990 kg, making it heavier than Tesla Model 3 long-range and performance vehicles.

Earlier this month, the same vehicle was spotted briefly by Jordan G as he drove past the MG Cyberster heading in the opposite direction.

Those photos were captured by Jordan’s Tesla and highlighted that the vehicle was in right-hand-drive configuration.

Although the MG Cyberster was shown as a concept car back in 2021, pre-orders on the car in China only opened in September 2023.

This model is already destined for the UK market with the MG Cyberster making an appearance at the Everything Electric show (previously the Fully Charged Live show) this week.

The show now has an “Electric Launchpad” area, where vehicles that are on the cusp of launching in that market are being showcased. This week the MG Cyberster will be joining the MG4 EV, MG5 EV and the MG ZS EV as vehicles on show by MG in the UK.

In China, the MG Cyberster comes in three powertrains starting with a 231 kW motor and going all the way up to 400 kW in the dual-motor performance variant. The latter can propel the convertible from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds.

Locally, last week, MG cut prices across its EV range. This made MG ZS EV the cheapest electric SUV to own in Australia. 

The MG4 also saw a cut in its prices with the MG4 X-Power coming in at $59,990 driveaway, making this electric hot-hatch one of the most value-for-performance vehicles on the market.

Back to the Cyberster, the pricing, specifications and local launch details are still unclear but we look forward to keeping an eye on this unique vehicle’s launch.
