First Superchargers without Tesla branding go online

EG Group, a UK-based fuel and convenience store giant that has operations in Australia, has opened its first charging sites featuring Tesla superchargers, but without the Tesla branding.

The Tesla Supercharge are known for their reliability, and in October last the company shared that it will start selling its industry-leading charging hardware to other charge point operators, starting with BP in the US.

A month later, EG Group followed with a supply deal for Tesla Superchargers in the UK and Europe to expand its network and now those first  EG Group charging sites with non-Tesla branded superchargers has gone online.

This site is located at a petrol station in Uttoxeter, about 60 km northeast of the city of Birmingham. The site has 8 supercharger stalls, each capable of delivering up to 250 kW of power. These chargers include the longer 2.98 m cable seen on the Tesla V4 supercharging hardware.

“This initiative represents a significant step forward in EG Group’s commitment to sustainable energy and our efforts to enhance the EV charging infrastructure,” the company said.

“By selecting Tesla Supercharger hardware, we are ensuring our customers have access to some of the most advanced charging technology available.”

Tesla Owners Club of UK confirmed that these chargers will also be available to Tesla drivers as well as non-Tesla EVs.

This is great news for EG Group, Tesla and EV drivers around the UK as more similar sites will continue to be rolled out across the country in the coming months and years.

At the time of announcing the purchase of Tesla supercharger hardware, EG Group shared its intent to expand its existing 600 charger network to over 20,000 chargers.

Geographically, these chargers will be spread across 3,600 EG Group sites across the UK and Europe under the EV point network. The EV point branding does appear on this first site to have gone online in Uttoxeter.

In Australia, EG Group also operates over 500 fuel and convenience stores the company acquired through Woolworths back in 2019.

This is a major milestone for EG Group and it also shows the first-mover advantage Tesla has had on its supercharger hardware and could form a large part of its future revenue stream as the world continues to make the switch to cleaner EVs.
