Back to the electric future: Tesla tows converted all-electric Delorean from Canberra to Melbourne for F1 reveal

A fully electric Delorean is currently making its way to from Canberra to Melbourne, to be revealed during this weekend’s Formula One racing event – and is being towed there by a Tesla. The owner was contacted by RED ENERGY to display the Delorean at the Melbourne F1 Gand Prix.

The right-hand drive Delorean, popularised through the 1985 hit film Back to the Future, is owned by Australian science fiction author author Mathew Reilly.

The converted Delorean has a 200 kW motor from a Tesla Model S and a 40kWh battery giving it a range of 250 km.

The owner says “the top speed is unknown yet, every time we hit 88mph, weird things happen!”

According to the owner, the conversion of the Delorean has dramatically improved its reliability.

The all-electric 80s classic will also feature in an upcoming documentary on the transition to clean energy transport called ‘electric dreams’.

The filmmaker, Ché Baker says he’s been filming for about 18months interviewing experts in various clean energy fields, politicians, EV users and car enthusiasts.

Ché says he could have used a Hilux or other rental to tow it to Melbourne from Canberra, however he wanted to take the opportunity to prove the point that EVs can tow.

Car sharing platform evee.com.au then stepped in to sponsor the journey with a Tesla Model X.
