Just days after opening Australia’s largest charging site in the NSW border town of Albury, just in time for Christmas, Tesla has now opened its most northern site in the country in the Queensland town of Rockhampton.
The Rockhampton site, opened over the weekend, has seven V3 superchargers, each capable of delivering up to 250 kW of fast-charging speeds.
There are several unique elements to this charging site. Not only is it the largest charging site in central and northern Queensland, it also has 7 fast-charging stalls. Most previous V3 supercharger sites have 3, 6, 9 and 12 stalls.
The other is that 5 of the stalls in Rockhampton have standard reverse-in layouts, while two outer stalls are designed for vehicles that can drive in. This could be helpful for those vehicles with a trailer.
On top of this, it is also open to non-Tesla vehicles. This was first noticed by an Australian Tesla supercharger expert and reader of The Driven, Charles G, who shared on Tesla motor club forum: “Nice – appears to be on the “Charge your non-Tesla” part of the app too!”
Non-Tesla drivers just need to download the Tesla app, select the “Charge your non-Tesla” option and can charge there for 85 c/kWh. This fee can be reduced with a charging membership from Tesla.
This particular site is one of the 46 co-funded sites as part of a $10 million scheme to develop fast-charging infrastructure across the new locations in the state.
The latest site is the fourth in Queensland this year. Previously, Calliope was the most northern Australian Tesla supercharger site which was opened at the end of September.
Around the new supercharger site, there are cafes, fast-food restaurants, amenities and retail shops, making it a good place to stop to charge an EV.
Ron, a member of the EV community, made a short video highlighting some of these along with showcasing the proximity of the superchargers to the local cafe.
As of the third week of December, Charles notes that there are five supercharging sites under construction with many likely to be open on this side of Christmas.
The Rockhampton supercharger is open to the public as of Friday 15 December and is located at 414-434 Yaamba Rd, Norman Gardens in Queensland.
