Tesla is the number one EV brand in Australia and part of the reason behind this success is its reliable charging network that connects towns and cities in many parts of the country. As the number of EVs rises in the country, so too does the number of Tesla supercharger sites.
Members of the EV community have spotted Tesla’s first supercharger site to feature the company’s latest fast-charging hardware, the V4 superchargers. It was spotted by Jules B in Albury, NSW, and shared on X.
The site appears to have 16 stalls which would make it the largest fast-charging site in the country when it opens. Other sites like the Box Hill supercharger in Melbourne which is also operated by Tesla have 12 chargers.
Charles G, an avid reader of The Driven and Australian supercharger tracking expert, described the latest site as: “This would be the first V4 in Australia and the biggest supercharger site of any type in Australia!”
Design-wise, the new V4 supercharger units are taller and have longer cables. The cable length has been increased from 1.98 meters on the current V3 superchargers to 2.98 meters.
The V4 superchargers are also expected to be faster than the current 250 kW V3 chargers.
As previously spotted in Europe, the US and parts of Asia, the newer cable on these units can easily reach the charging port on non-Tesla EVs while parked in the available parking bays.
This is good news as Tesla has opened 30 of its sites to non-Tesla EVs. Since that announcement, EV owners of non-Tesla EVs have hundreds more chargers available to them.
Earlier this year, sightings from Europe have also confirmed the placement of a credit card reader along with a screen to show payment being taken by non-Tesla EV drivers when charging there.
In Australia so far, the only option available for non-Tesla EVs at those charging stations has been to sign up to the Tesla app and select the “Charger your non-Tesla” setting.
With Tesla continuing to innovate and now expanding its latest charging hardware outside of Europe and the US, it’s only a matter of time before it starts rapid expansion of this V4 supercharger rollout in markets globally.
The new V4 supercharger site appears to be the start of the local expansion with the latest hardware from Tesla.
This site is also likely to be opened to non-Tesla EVs as it’s close to a major route connecting Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney.
The site is located at the Commercial Club Albury – 618 Dean Street in Albury, NSW. It is expected to go live on this side of Christmas.
