MG slashes price of ZS EV, making it the cheapest electric SUV in Australia

One of Australia’s most affordable electric SUVs has just received a price cut to help boost its sales.

The MG ZS EV now starts at $40,990, which is a reduction of $3,000 from its previous base price of $43,990. The new pricing is accessible to all buyers who purchased the vehicle from November 1 this year.

The other two variants also get a price drop and the lineup’s new pricing includes:

  • Excite: $40,990 before on-roads
  • Essence: $43,990 before on-roads
  • Long Range: $49,990 before on-roads

“MG continues to work with SAIC, our suppliers, Dealer Network and freight partners to reduce costs wherever possible,” a company spokesman said.

“We are committed to helping more Australians to make the switch to EV sooner than later. Whenever we are able to pass price reductions onto our customers, we will make sure we do.”

The updated Excite and Essence had their first deliveries in the third quarter of 2022 with an improved range of 320 km which was a step up from the previous model. This was from a 50.3 kWh battery pack.

Following those deliveries, a Long Range version of the SUV was unveiled at the Fully Charged Live show in Sydney in March this year.

This variant received a bump up of 120 km in WLTP range thanks to the bigger battery pack. It comes with a 72.6 kWh battery pack that can offer up to 440 km of WLTP range over the Excite and Essence variants.

Back in July, MG offered a $5,000 rebate on the Long Range model from its driveaway price. At that time, the driveaway price of a new Long Range variant was $57,709 in states like NSW.

All three variants have helped 2,549 sales in 2023, making it the third-best-selling electric SUV in the country behind the Model Y and the Atto 3.

Now with the new MG4 on the market, sales have shifted towards the eclectic hatchback with October seeing 751 vehicles sold. In comparison, the MG ZS EV accounted for 190 vehicles.

With MG ZS EV sales being steered towards the MG4 and BYD’s Atto 3, the price cuts could help one of the original EVs regain some market share in the coming months.
