Another three towns join Australia’s longest electric vehicle charging network

The towns of Esperance, Merredin and Southern Cross in Western Australia have joined the WA EV Network, the longest electric vehicle (EV) charging network in Australia.

The state government and its state owned utility Horizon Power have added the first 150kW chargers at Esperance, which will allow allow four EVs, instead of two, to be charged at the same time, in as little as 20 minutes.

Earlier in the week, the state -owned energy retailer and generator Synergy announced that it had connected Merredin and Southern to the WA EV Network, each of which has a single 150kW fast-charger and a back-up AC 7.6kW charger.

The new facilities are located at the Central Wheatbelt Visitor Centre carpark in Merredin and across the road from the Palace Hotel in Southern Cross. The WA EV Network is expected to be completed early next year with 49 EV charging locations across the state, averaging less than 200 kilometres apart.

Synergy CEO, David Fyfe, said the charging sites in Merredin and Southern Cross were a significant milestone with the WA EV Network now extending east to the Goldfields.

“We plan to open a fast charger in Coolgardie soon and construction on an EV charging station in Kalgoorlie is expected to start early 2024,” Fyfe added.

The announcement follows less than a week after Horizon Power announced that it had added three new towns to the Network, including the city of Karratha and the towns of Exmouth and Kununurra.

Other WA EV Network chargers are opening soon in Coolgardie, Warmun, Derby, Halls Creek, Norseman and at the Overlander Roadhouse.
