Model 3 and Atto 3 take top spots as EV sales boosted by new models

EV uptake in Australia has surpassed 70,000 EVs in 2023, after another 6,057 EVs were sold in the month of October. 

New data from FCAI reveals that 106,809 vehicles made it onto Australian roads, with EVs making up 5.67% of the total vehicle sales during the month.

The Tesla Model 3 continued its comeback on the back of price cuts on inventory, helping one of Australia’s best sellers reclaim the top spot on the EV ladder with 1,178 sales for the month.

Not far behind was the BYD’s very popular Atto 3 SUV with 918 sales which exceeded Australia’s best-selling vehicle this year, the Tesla Model Y, which slowed to 810 sales.

Two of the most-affordable EVs also sold in good numbers, with the MG4 751 sales, and the new BYD Dolphin also having its first month sales with 100 vehicles delivered.

October also 2023 bought various new EVs to the market which included the BYD Dolphin, the Kia EV9 and Ford Mustang Mach-E. This is great for EV adoption as more choices in the market will help more drivers make the switch.

The best-selling EVs in October were:

  • Tesla Model 3 – 1178 sales
  • BYD Atto 3 – 912 sales
  • Tesla Model Y – 810 sales
  • MG MG4 – 751 sales
  • Kia EV6 – 220 sales
  • Mercedes-Benz EQA – 162 sales
  • Volvo XC40 Rechare – 159 sales
  • Cupra Born – 128 sales
  • BYD Dolphin – 100 sales
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5 – 99 sales

Tesla sales in the coming months will be on the rise a new 2024 Tesla Model 3 deliveries are expected to start in the first quarter of 2024. 

After 100 sales for the Dolphin and BYD Seal also recently launched, the 2024 EV uptake is likely to surpass 85,000 vehicles in one year. This is exciting news for EV adoption as EV sales continue to make a bigger proportion of vehicle sales than in previous years.
