Vehicle rental company Sixt Australia has partnered with rideshare giant Uber to offer rideshare drivers access to electric vehicles through a subscription for $339 per week.*

Uber drivers will be able to select from month-to-month or annual subscription options and choose EVs from BYD, Tesla, BMW, or Kia. A range of luxury electric vehicles are also expected to become available in the coming months, further expanding the range of EVs to choose from.

Included in the subscription is vehicle insurance, 24/7 roadside assistance, fast access to replacement vehicles, and the ability to test their preferred EV with 1,400 kilometres per month.

“This is a great option for Uber drivers who are looking for an affordable pathway to switch to an electric vehicle but aren’t looking to purchase a new car,” said Matthew Beattie, CEO of Sixt Australia.

“A range of subscription options gives Uber drivers the chance to try an electric vehicle for shorter period to before committing to a longer-term subscription or purchasing a new electric vehicle.”

The two companies are also hoping that the offering will help rideshare drivers tackle the current cost-of-living crisis that has been especially felt at the bowser.

“Uber is committed to becoming a zero emissions platform in Australia by 2040,” said Tom Mercer, Uber head of earner & regulatory operations.

“Two-thirds of drivers have told us they want to make the switch to an EV, but the number one barrier to doing so is the upfront cost of the car.

“Through partnerships like this with SIXT, we aim to provide drivers with a range of flexible options that make it easier than ever to get behind the wheel of an EV and our partnership with SIXT will help us realise this goal.”

*This article has been updated to correct the cost of the rideshare subscription. The correct cost is $339 per week, not $339 per month.
