In recent years, the now Chinese owned MG car brand has become a mover and shaker when it comes to electric vehicles. It launched its first electric SUV in Australia in 2020.Ā

The brand recently launched the MG4 electric hatchback, which has brought a level of sportiness to its electric lineup, and it is now taking things to another level with the pre-sales of its upcoming electric roadster that it calls the Cyberster.

According to a new report by cnevpost, MG has started to take customer pre-orders in China as it aims to deliver the two-door electric convertible sportscar.

MG first unveiled the Cyberster concept in 2021 at the Shanghai auto show. In the last two and a half years, MG has been gauging interest from buyers in China and in other countries to help advance the concept into mass production.Ā

It will be available in three variants which include two single-motor versions with the rear-wheel-drive powertrain. This is similar to the MG4 in its single motor versions currently available in Australia.

These single-motor variants have two power outputs with the lower version coming in at 231 kW while the slightly more powerful one delivers up to 250 kW of power.

With the dual-motor version also available, it delivers a huge power boost with the two motors packing 400 kW. This helps it get from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 200 km/h.

For comparison, Tesla’s Model 3 Performance sedan has a 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 261 km/h in track mode.Ā The Model 3 Performance on paper appears to be quite efficient given it delivers that much higher top speed figure with just 393 kW of power from its dual-motor powertrain.Ā

Dimension-wise, the MG Cyberster comes in at:

  • 4,535 mm in length
  • 1,913 mm in width
  • 1,329 mm in height

In comparison, the MG4 hatchback comes in at 4,287 mm which is 248 mm shorter than the Cyberster. The new convertible is also wider than the MG4 which gives it a sportier stance on the road.

MG has previously confirmed that the MG Cyberster will be making its way to international markets including the UK where interested customers can register their interest in the right-hand-drive version new two-door convertible sportscar.

Given Australia has seen many of the models launched in the UK make their way to the local market, the Cyberster could possibly be one of these sometime next year.

In the meantime, those interested in an electric sportscar from MG will have to settle for the upcoming MG4 Xpower which was recently spotted in Sydney.Ā
