MG4 Xpower Performance: Fastest electric hatchback spotted in Australia

Last month, MG surprised many at the launch event of its sub-$40,000 electric hatchback by hinting at a performance variant that will soon make its way to Australia. 

This very performance version has already been spotted in Sydney, with a photo of this rare car emerging online this week. The matte-green MG4 was captured parked at night opposite Officeworks and was shared by an anonymous poster on the MG4 Facebook group.

Fans of MG’s hatchback were thrilled to see the top yet-to-be-released variant captured. “Didn’t know there were any X-power models here yet 😍,” one said.

Another keen MG4 enthusiast commented on the colour of this car by saying: “Gorgeous colour but matte paint is an absolute nightmare to maintain.”

The photo from the rear also shows NSW slimline numberplates which have been covered. On the sides, the Xpower has special 18-inch alloy wheels that MG in other markets like the UK calls “Cyclone Alloy Wheels”.

On top of the standard MG4 features, the Xpower in these markets gets:

• Track Mode Display
• Black Alcantara Upholstery
• 18″ Cyclone Alloy Wheels with Orange Calipers

The performance powertrain incorporates a dual-motor setup with 320 kW which is a bump from existing single-motor Long Range variant which tops out at 180 kW. This helps the Xpower sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. 

This powertrain is fed by a 64 kWh battery pack which is the mid-spec battery found in the current variants available in the Australian market.

The dual-motor system incorporates MG4’s brand-new all-wheel-drive system that according to the brand’s UK website adds:

• Improved traction
• Stability
• Enhanced safety with active braking on the inside wheels
• Launch control

Pricing of the MG4 Xpower starts at £37,295 with the “racing green” paint. This is the similar to the Long Range variant offered in the UK.

MG locally is yet to announce any further details about this variant but is likely to do so in the coming months. We were impressed with the driver-focused warm hatch offering that the Long Range variant bought so Xpower is expected to amp that up, just a notch.
