Chinese car maker BYD has announced that it has now produced 500,000 Atto 3 electric SUVs – a major milestone for an all-electric vehicle that has only been in production for 19 months.

BYD shared the news on X and its other social media pages, highlighting the importance of this model. In Australia, it has already sold more than 10,000 Atto 3s, making it one of its most important export markets, and the company is releasing another two electric models into this market.

The first BYD Atto 3 originally rolled off the production line back in February 2022 and was named in its home market of China as the BYD Yuan Plus.

Australia was one of the first international markets to receive this electric SUV with the local reveal happening back in the first quarter of 2022.

First deliveries of the model began back in August last year with mass deliveries commencing before the end of 2022.

During that period of time, BYD’s local distributor, EV Direct, partnered with Eagers Automotive to have a national experience centre network. This has so far been fairly successful with the Atto 3 deliveries having occurred across most major cities.

Locally, the brand continues to expand with the launch of a new “Megastore” concept for consumers. The first of these educational-based EV experience Megastores opened in Alexandria, Sydney last week.

This store highlights and showcases BYD products, what sits under the body and the innovation the brand has delivered in its vehicles so far. Along with that, future products like the affordable Dolphin and BYD’s performance-focused sedan, the Seal, were also on display.
