German luxury carmaker BMW says it will invest £600 million ($A1.2 billion) to transform its manufacturing facility in Oxford into an all-electric production site for its Mini marque.
BMW over the weekend presented the latest all-electric versions of the Mini Cooper and Mini Countryman at the IAA Mobility show in Germany, and then said its Oxford plant will produce electric only cars by 2030.
“With this new investment we will develop the Oxford plant for production of the new generation of electric MINIs and set the path for purely electric car manufacturing in the future,” said Milan Nedeljković, member of the board of management of BMW AG responsible for production.
Mini Plant Oxford will reach a production of around 200,000 cars per year in the medium term, though until 2030 this will consist of a mixture of electric and ICE vehicles. From 2030, however, the Oxford production plant will produce all-electric Mini models exclusively.
When the plant goes fully electric in 2030, BMW will have invested more than £3 billion on electrifying production at its Swindon, Hams Hall, and Oxford plants since 2000.
Before production of the Mini Cooper 3-door and Mini Aceman get underway in Oxford they will be produced in China at BMW’s new manufacturing plant in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu Province, a joint venture with Chinese automotive giant Great Wall Motor.
