Tesla has dominated the EV landscape in Australia, and across the globe, for nearly a decade. In the early years, the company produced cars in a converted factory in Fremont, California and shipped them locally in shipping containers but that changed in 2021 when the bulk of Tesla Model 3 vehicles started to be shipped from it’s new purpose-built Shanghai Gigafactory.
Now Tesla has announced that its Shanghai gigafactory, now Tesla’s global export hub, has produced its two-millionth car.
The vehicle that marked the milestone was a multicoat red Model Y and it was celebrated by factory staff with a mass photo at the Shanghai plant shared on Twitter/X.
The first million cars were produced at Shanghai in 33 months. The next million took just 13 months.
Over the last couple of years, Tesla has been known for producing high-quality vehicles out of the Shanghai plant. The same factory is renowned for producing vehicles with Tesla’s latest features before they make their way to Tesla’s other factories.
Tesla’s latest Model 3, the new Project Highland variant, is currently being produced at the Shanghai factory and is expected to eventually begin production in the US.
With Tesla having over 97% of the supply chain for the Shanghai factory based locally in China, it also helps reducing inefficiencies such as the cost to transport parts all around the world, which then translates into lower prices for end customers. Customers in Australia have seen several price cuts this year.
The Shanghai plant as delivered over 50,000 EVs into Australia, including both the Model 3s and Model Y.
