Volvo has teased its plans to release a fully electric people mover into the market with a video showcasing the new EM90.
The newly released video gives a glimpse of the luxurious interior before panning out through the roof of the large EV and provides a drone view of the people mover driving down the road.
Volvo describes the new EM90 as “a place to connect, create, relax, work, or just think.” This gives us a clue about the type of customers it aims to have when it is launched.
It also calls the spacious interior “a Scandinavian living room on the move,” which is likely to offer luxury combined with a minimalist design.
In Australia, SUVs dominate the spacious passenger vehicle market and the electric people mover options are currently limited to the LDV Mifa9 and Mercedes-Benz EQV.
Both of these vehicles have a starting price of over $100,000 and the Volvo, if launched in the local market next year, is likely to be above that as well.
Given Volvo Car’s parent company, Geely Holdings also has another brand, Zeekr, which offers an electric people mover called the Zeekr 009, the EM90 is likely to have various underpinnings shared with it.
Currently, the Zeekr 009 comes with a 140 kWh battery pack and the top-spec variant has an equivalent starting price of $A129,000 so we expect the Volvo’s people mover option to be above that.
Volvo also has a large 7-seater EX90 model in the works which is likely to arrive on local shores in 2024. That vehicle has a 111 kWh battery pack which can deliver up to 600 km of WLTP range.
Volvo plans to have the EM90 people mover debut in November, 2023, with pre-orders to start for customers in China, the largest global EV market.
More details on the EM90 will be revealed in the coming months.
