June 2023 was the biggest month for electric car sales in Australia, with a total of 11,042 EV sales according to FCAI vFacts data released this week. This made up 8.84% of the total vehicle sales for the month.

Today, we look a bit deeper into all the EV models that made the charts, especially those that stood out from the crowd.

Tesla led the charts once again with 7,018 EV sales, making up 64% of the total EV sales for the month.

The Telsa Model Y was again the best-selling passenger car in the country, which was previously held by the Toyota Rav4. It was only beaten by the Toyota Hilix ute. Thousands of people decided to get behind the wheel of an all-electric SUV ditching visits to petrol stations in years to come.

BYD also had its best month of sales ever with 1,532 sales of the Atto 3 electric SUV. This was also the second month in a row that it overtook Australia’s previous best-selling EV, the Tesla Model 3 which goes to show the popularity of SUVs in Australia.

Speaking of SUVs, Kia had a great month with its EV6 and e-Niro. Both vehicles had the best month in 2023 so far with 154 and 125 sales, respectively.

MG ZS EV is another SUV that was once crowned Australia’s most affordable EV. It had 387 electric sales which made it’s top month for sales, sharing it with February when it also sold the same amount. This time though, the Long Range model has also made it to the list helping with the SUV’s resurgence.

Looking at some of the sedans that were noteworthy included the Polestar 2 which also had its best month for sales with 251 sales, helping it make it into the top 5 on the charts.

On the other end of the pricing spectrum, Porsche also saw the Taycan have its best month in over 12 months with 74 sales.

It’s difficult to tell whether this was on the back of the Tesla Model S being shelved in right-hand-drive markets like ours in Australia or supply chains improving. Regardless the Porsche Taycan continues to make the charts with its sports sedan and sleek wagon variants.

Coming back to the more affordable end of the market and an electric hatchback, GWM’s Ora had its first major month of sales. Starting at under $45,000, it’s one of the most affordable electric available today and 62 of these made it to the charts in June. This is coming from its first month of sales in May when only 3 units were sold.

On Thursday, as we report elsewhere, the Ora starting price has now been cut to below $40,000.

It’s good to see more affordable models like the Ora starting to become available in the market along with some highly anticipated hatchbacks that are to follow like the BYD Dolphin and MG’s MG4.

That’s one end of the market where a lot more action will start to take place in the coming months making 2023 a very exciting year for those looking at making the switch to electric, and ditching petrol station visits forever.
