The ACT’s electric vehicle policies seem to be working with EV uptake exceeding 20 per cent for month of May, up from just 3% in May 2022.
According to the latest data, 318 new EVs were registered in the month, taking the ACT’s total EV fleet to 4,541 as of June 1.
The 20 per cent share is more than two and a half times the national average of just under eight per cent in recent months.

ACT’s EV fleet appears to be doubling every year. In 2020 there were 827 EVs registered in the ACT. In 2021 there were 1619 and by the end of 2022 there was 2999.
In 2023 an additional 1,542 EVs have been registered in just the first 5 months, meaning the ACT fleet is on track to double again this year to over 6000.

With EV growth far exceeding all other states, the ACT is racing ahead on decarbonising transport.
Still, shile the growth rate is good, EVs make up just 1.4% of the ACTs total vehicle fleet. However if the territory is able to continue doubling its EV fleet for another five years, EVs would make up over 40% of the entire fleet, provided the total fleet stays around the same volume as it is now.

Although it doesn’t have a big upfront subsidy like Queensland, which recently doubled its EV rebate to $6000, the ACT does have some good EV policy including 2 years free vehicle registration on new and used EVs, no stamp duty and up to $15,000 interest free loans for financing.
